Women in STEM fields have come a long way since the infamous photo of scientists at the Solvay Conference on Physics in 1927 (seen above), in which the only woman pictured was Marie Curie. Women generally dominate undergraduate Biology majors; yet, by the time a subset of these women finish their PhD, many do not continue on to academic positions. I aim to contribute to changing this trajectory in the future.

My mentoring and teaching philosophy
I support the Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education: A Call to Action Report sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and AAAS. I believe in training and teaching through “more concept, less content”. At the University of South Florida, I currently supervise 12 women with STEM majors (see current students page) + my lab manager Christina (seen to the left). All of the students are currently on a volunteer basis. They not only contribute to my ongoing research projects but are also encouraged to develop independent research projects of their own. My goal is to train and prepare bright women to become successful and confident leaders in STEM fields.
